Why would I want veneers to perfect my smile?

For some men and women, minor reshaping with the drill, paired with professional teeth whitening, is enough to achieve that gleaming smile. If your teeth are cracked, chipped, misshapen, or severely stained, those treatments may not work. Under those circumstances, veneers can be especially helpful.

Veneers are very thin shells, made up of porcelain or composite resin, that fit directly over each tooth. Once they are bonded to your teeth, they provide a natural, more pleasing smile. Veneers also are very difficult to stain, so you’ll be able to keep your pearly whites whiter for a long period of time.

How are veneers applied?

During your first appointment, Dr. Nosratabadi thoroughly cleans your mouth and figures out which shade of white is best for your veneers. She’ll gently remove small amounts of tooth enamel, so the veneers can fit right on. Depending on the sensitivity of your teeth, you may or may not need local anesthesia during this time. Most men and women do just fine with no numbing agents, although you can certainly ask for local anesthesia if you are in any sort of discomfort.

After all of the selected teeth are reshaped, Dr. Nosratabadi takes impressions of your teeth to send to the lab. She covers each tooth with a temporary veneer until your permanent ones come in.

During your second appointment, Dr. Nosratabadi removes the temporary veneers and cements your permanent veneers in place through a light curing process. She finishes up by removing any excess material and reshaping the veneers as needed. You might need to come in for one more appointment, just as a follow-up to check for comfort.

Are dental veneers permanent?

Veneers are considered long-lasting, rather than permanent. Many men and women with veneers can enjoy them for as long as 7-15 years. With good oral hygiene techniques at home, paired with regular dental exams and cleanings, your veneers might last even longer. Once they start chipping, become discolored, or fall off, you’ll need to have them replaced.
